A well-equipped and well-informed fisherman has more chances of catching more fish than an unprepared one. Here are few tips to prepare yourself for your whiting fishing experience.
- Tip -1 Know about whiting spots
You can find them in bays, harbours or inlets. They are flat-bottomed silver fish that feed on crustaceans in the waves. They can be easily found in the breaking waves of the surf areas where they find their favourite food, the mole crab.
- Tip-2 The fishing gear
Any saltwater fishing gear should be good enough to catch a whiting. But since the whiting moves around in breaking waves, it is best to get long and heavy fishing rods to catch them easily.
- Tip-3 Spinning for anglers
Anglers fishing from docks or piers, use a spinning reel and medium action rod to catch whiting. A better and stronger setup lets them catch the right fish instead of other fishes living in the water.
- Tip-4 Fight and resistance
Whiting fish generally show up a scrappy fight compared to their relatively small size. A braided line is best for catching whiting because it helps to build resistance against wind, current and waves that can be a hurdle in surf areas.
- Tip-5 Hooks
Since the whiting fish has small mouths, circle hooks are best for catching them. For surf zone fishing, the fish finder and double dropper loop rig are your best gear. The dropper loop rig can help you catch the fish with multiple baits.
- Tip-6 The right bait
The favourite food of the whiting is the sand flea or mole crab. You can catch them with a sand flea rake or buy them from the bait shop. Other baits of the whiting fish include oysters, small clams, shrimps and small crabs.
- Tip-7 Luring the whiting
Luring is generally not used much to catch the whiting but jigs and artificially scented shrimps can also be used to attract whiting fish.
